Marcia Hines returns as Australian Idol fans cry foul over upset win

The Australian Idol 2024 grand finale left viewers stunned and divided as Dylan Wright emerged victorious, leaving many fans feeling that Amy Reeves had been unjustly denied the crown.

The electrifying finale aired on Monday evening, showcasing the talents of Denvah Baker-Moller, Dylan Wright and Amy Reeves as they vied for the coveted title. However, it was Wright who clinched the top spot, much to the disappointment of numerous fans who had rallied behind Reeves.

Throughout the season, Wright had consistently impressed both judges and audiences alike with his remarkable performances. His emotional reaction upon winning the recording contract with Sony Music Entertainment Australia and a $100,000 cash prize was palpable: “I’m about to cry!" he told the cheering crowd. "So, thanks!”

The finale kicked off with hosts Ricki Lee and Scott Tweedie addressing the absence of judge Marcia Hines, who had been hospitalised due to health issues potentially related to her Type 1 diabetes. The void left by Hines was temporarily filled by guest judge Guy Sebastian, who stepped in to ensure the show's continuity.

Despite her absence, Hines' spirit remained present as she conveyed her apologies via Instagram, assuring fans of her eagerness to return. “I feel fine,” she said on Monday night's show in response to Ricki Lee and Scott Tweedie. “I want to thank everybody who reached out towards me, you know. I do appreciate it. And you guys need to know – I couldn’t have missed this for the world. I couldn’t have.”

Hines admitted to having had stitches after collapsing backstage, and briefly lifted her hair to show the stitches on her forehead. “It is all good," she explained. "I’m good. I go back to the hospital tonight,” she added jokingly.

As the finalists delivered their last performances, Reeves' rendition of Jessie J's "Bang Bang" stood out, earning praise from judge Kyle Sandilands and igniting a wave of support from viewers. However, despite her standout performance, it was Wright who ultimately clinched the title after a tense battle with Reeves.

The decision sparked a flurry of reactions on social media, with many expressing disbelief and frustration over Reeves' loss. Some fans proclaimed Reeves as the most deserving contestant in Idol history. “Call the police!" they wrote. "A robbery has taken place on #AustralianIdol. Amy has been absolutely shafted. Easily the best performer in idol history.”

Amidst the chorus of disappointment, there were voices of congratulations for Wright, acknowledging his talent and triumph in the competition. Despite the divided opinions, one thing remained certain – the passion and fervour of Australian Idol fans, who eagerly await the next chapter in the musical journeys of all the finalists.

Images: Channel Seven

Matt Wright accuses police of overlooking evidence in helicopter crash investigation

Outback Wrangler star Matt Wright has revealed what he believes caused the helicopter crash that killed his friend and co-star Chris Wilson in 2022, accusing police of ignoring crucial evidence.

Wright is facing seven charges regarding his conduct after the fatal crash, including attempting to pervert the course of justice, fabrication of evidence and destruction of evidence.

Chris “Willow” Wilson was killed on February 28, 2022, while collecting crocodile eggs in a remote area of West Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory.

The 34-year-old had been suspended in a sling from a helicopter when the aircraft crashed, resulting in his death.

Sebastian Robinson, the pilot of the Robinson R44 helicopter suffered severe spinal injuries from the crash.

In an exclusive interview with The Sunday Telegraph, Wright revealed the ongoing police investigation is “focusing on picking apart my life and business” rather than the events leading to the fatal crash.

“I do seriously wonder why the NT Police are not focusing on whether the helicopter was refuelled and the fact the toxicology report reveals the detection of cocaine derivatives in the pilot’s blood sample,” he said.

No one has been charged for Wilson’s death, and Wright has “strenuously” denied any wrongdoing.

Wright previously claimed that Mr Robinson’s blood sample tested positive for cocaine and that has been supported by a letter sent by his lawyer David Newey to Senior Crown prosecutor Steven Ledek.

The letter was used as evidence during a court hearing in relation to Wright’s charges in Darwin in April 2023, highlighting information contained in the prosecution’s brief of evidence.

Wright told the publication he recently learned Mr Robsinson, the pilot who was externally contracted for the flight, “was at a party into the early hours of the day before the crash, where people were using cocaine”.

A man who wished to remain anonymous told The Sunday Telegraph that he was introduced to Mr Robinson at a party in Virginia, 30km southeast of Darwin, two nights before the crash.

The outlet reported he came forward after hearing about the toxicology report being referred to in the court case.

Wright described the new revelations as “extremely concerning”, especially given the references to the toxicology report in court, and said if he were aware of what it suggests occurred before the flight “it never would have taken off”.

He also said the preliminary Australian Transport Safety Bureau report suggested the helicopter was not refuelled en route to the egg collection. He believes that is likely what caused the crash.

The helicopter was expected to leave Darwin and refuel at Mr Borradaile on the way to a preparation area near King River in Arnhem Land, where it would land, attach the sling and connect a person before beginning the egg collection.

Wright told The Sunday Telegraph his Darwin fuel stations use “blue fuel” but the station at Mt Borradaile near the crash site used “green”. The colour indicates lead levels. It was reported that the fuel at Mt Borradaile was provided by a third party company involved in egg collections.

The ATSB report said investigators drained “about 250ml of blue fuel from the main tank’s bladder” following the crash.

“This makes me question whether the helicopter was refuelled at Mount Borradaile and whether it was fuel exhaustion that caused the crash,” Wright told the outlet.

A pilot flying another helicopter joining the fatal mission told the Australian there was “no possible way” fuel exhaustion caused the crash because he filled the crashed R44’s tank himself at a fuel-drum site near Mt Borradaile shortly before the crash.

Tim Luck said he flew from Noonamah to the drum site with another pilot and saw Mr Wilson filling up the tank. He also noted he jumped out and took over pumping.

“I’m 100 per cent sure that machine was filled to the top,” he said.

However, Mr Wright said Mr Luck was not “authorised or trained in refuelling helicopters” as that responsibility, he said, was up to the pilot in command.

The Sunday Telegraph obtained a photo which appears to show Wilson sitting in the right-side pilot’s seat with the helicopter’s controls in his hands. Wright said the picture shows Wilson flying the aircraft in the pilot’s seat and Robinson sitting on the left, with both of his feet off the pedals.

“This was a commercial flight, the pilot was not an instructor and Chris Wilson did not have a commercial helicopter licence,” he said.

According to The Sunday Telegraph, the image is time stamped at 7:43am, 40 minutes after the aircraft left Darwin, and appears to show the fuel gauge indicating the tank was about three quarters full. It was an estimated 90 minute flight from Darwin to fuel the drums.

He was not blaming Wilson, describing him as a “true legend” in tributes on social media, for being behind the controls, but could not understand why the “pilot went against protocol”.

NT Police said in a statement they were “continuing to investigate all matters relating to this incident”.

The ATSB’s final report into the cause of the crash is set for release by September 2023.

"That was flawless": Sunrise host falls for hilarious April Fools prank

Sunrise host Monique Wright got tricked by co-host Matt Doran’s elaborate April Fools’ Day prank on Saturday.

Wright was convinced that she had scored an exclusive interview with US President Barack Obama, when in fact she was interviewing an impersonator called Reggie.

“Mr Obama, what an absolute thrill to have you in the country,” she gushed “Gosh we love you here, and it was fantastic to have you on our programme.

“Thank you so much, safe travels home,” she added.

To make the prank believable, the Sunrise team had intentionally distorted Wright’s screen so that she couldn’t recognise who she was speaking with over Zoom.

Doran waited until after the interview to reveal the truth.

“Just before we let you go, perhaps it might be an opportune time just to let Mon know that we’re actually speaking to Reggie from LA who is the top Obama impersonator in the world,” he said.

“G’day Reggie! That was flawless.”

Wright was left fuming and blamed her gullibility on bad technology.

“Reggie, they’ve actually used a monitor which looks very strange, I can’t see you properly,” she said, to which Doran joked that it wasn’t a valid excuse.

She then acknowledged the “extraordinary” acting abilities of the Sunrise team and exclaimed: “I hate you, I was so excited!”

“I ran down to get changed with two minutes' notice, so I would like to apologise to Chrissy the producer who saw me in my underwear,” she said, revealing how excited she was for the interview.

“I hate all of you but I mostly hate you!” she jokingly said to Doran.

Doran then tried to make her feel better by saying that anyone would’ve fallen for the same prank.

“You were given no notice, Reggie was so convincing,” he said, adding that he was terrified of what Wright might do to get him back.

Wright then joked that he should be terrified after throwing everyone into a frenzy and getting the “whole building” involved in his elaborate prank.

“Watch this space, stay comfortable Matt,” she said.

Images: Channel Seven

Kochie shocked at co-host’s revelation

Sunrise host Monique Wright has left her co-hosts, Natalie Barr and David Koch, visibly shocked after revealing the “appalling” situation she was in.

On Thursday, Wright told her co-hosts that she is among the “desperate” Aussies struggling to secure a home, after a segment on rentals.

“We've recently been looking, and we've looked at 30 properties,” Wright shared.

“Wow,” her co-hosts exclaimed in sync.

“'It is appalling. It is so appalling,” she continued amid their gasps.

“You see it. People are desperate. Socceroos hero's tragic news moments after full time

Bailey Wright could hardly speak after the Socceroos' incredible win over Denmark.

He paid an emotional tribute to huge sacrifices made by his family, after receiving the news that his mother in-law had passed away.

“I just want to dedicate this to my wife, and her mum - I'm going to be honest, I'm not sure if she's still with us. So this was for them," Wright said.

"They're having a really tough time back home, but ultimately, they've made this possible for me to be here and live one of my dreams.”

"I've just come in from a message from my wife ... it's sort of something I've kept to myself, we've all got a lot going on.”

Wright managed to put personal issues to the side, coming on with half an hour to go and helping see off Denmark, to secure Australia's spot in the last 16.

"(Coach Graham Arnold) asked me to warm up when it was 0-0, then we had a few shouts that Tunisia were winning 1-0 so I wasn't sure, maybe, if I'd get on or what would happen.

"Next minute, (Mat Leckie) worked his magic (to score) and I was already warmed up and ready to go.”
Whatever he kept to himself, even from other players, is now out in the open but there's no doubt the rest of the squad will be around to support him.

"When we set out on this journey four years ago and Arnie kind of said to us what he wanted this to be about; and that our mateship and togetherness is what's going to make us create history."

Image: Getty

Dr Wright was affectionately dubbed “Merry Medic Dr James Wright” as he was admired by many Australians.

"Mum lived to 100, so I plan to live to 110," he said in a previous interview with 9News. "That's the plan. I might revise it later on."

Sadly, he didn't quite make it to 110, with the famed doctor dying two weeks shy of his 95th birthday.

Dr Weight is survived by his four children, nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. His family are yet to release a statement, but tributes have started pouring in on social media.

Radio host Ben Fordham was among the first to pay tribute, followed by entertainment journalist Peter Ford, who expressed condolences via Twitter.

Vale John Wright https://t.co/K2C60LQurn via @

— Peter Ford (@mrpford) November 28, 2022

Dr Wright was loved by his viewers all throughout his journey. From his younger days in the Depression era, to his early years as a doctor. He embarked on quite the impressive media career despite claiming he "has the worst voice in the world".

In 1972, he appeared on Channel Nine's The Mike Walsh Show, then on Midday with Ray Martin and Midday with Kerri-Anne.

He then pivoted to radio where he made a name for himself on 2GB and the 2UE, presenting two-hour weekly programs.

"He cared about old people, he cared about people who were perhaps forgotten by other doctors or the rest of society. He put his money where his mouth was," Ray Martin told 9News.

On top of his TV cameos and radio hosting gigs, Wright also wrote countless columns. He contributed to a number of Australia publications including the likes of The Sunday Telegraph, The Australian Women's Weekly, Woman's Day and teen title Dolly and more, where he gave thoughtful and expert medical advice.

However, Dr Wright’s life wasn't without his own health battles having fought throat cancer back in 2012. He was lucky enough to experience remission but was left heart-broken when his wife Noreen died in her sleep that same night.

Ultimately, Dr Wright died from bowel cancer but remained positive and fought to the best of his abilities to the very end.

He will be sorely missed by the nation and his family alike.

Image: Twitter

Go back and grab the tail. There you go, grab the tail. Two hands! Two hands!”

Banjo appears to lose interest in taking the snake back to the bushes, with Wright trying to encourage his son again.

“Quick, grab him, he’s going to bite Dad,” Wright jokes.

The video was praised by many, with a lot of commenters comparing Matt's relationship with Banjo to the late Steve Irwin's relationship with Bindi.

Despite the many positive comments, the wild clip wasn't received well by some.

“Normally I love your videos but I’m not a fan of this behaviour. No need to stress the animal just for an Instagram video,” one wrote.

“In America they would call child services lol,” another added.
